dvd function not working

Got a cdrw/dvd combo drive. CD function works, CD-r/rw works; Dvd data and video shat out after watchin "dirty harry." Dvds will not even get close to spinning up, then the drive will make mechanical clicking/stopping sounds every 4-5 seconds after about 30-40 seconds, the drive quits trying to read at such a low speed.

Installing/Uninstalling from device manager will, upon reboot, let the drive spin up to full speed and play a movie(yay! right?) for 4 Seconds at which point, the drive slows down and then clicks. Then the disc will show up in "an unsupported format" unable to be read from.

So if it works for a short period, I'm hopin its not completely shot to shit, especially cuz i take car of my shit. So i go to upgrade/flash the firmware. Problem is, its a "Toshiba Samsung Storage Technology"(TSSTcorp)
drive. So, I can't find firmware for the drive- at least not from the joint endeavor TSSTcorp. Fine- so I check toshiba firmware out. Nothing. Check samsung Firmware out. FOUND IT-no, not really(see below).

I have a "TSSTcorp CDW/DVD TS-L462A" so I find third party sites that offer both "u300els.bin" and "u301els.bin" The 300 is exactly what I got off of samsung's website. So you startup up the Samsung Flash Utility that comes with the bin and use it according to the readme.

1) Use supplied *.bin - didn't work - "firmware is not compatible with this drive" - too bad samsung gave it to me. Other bin's haven't worked.

Please lemme know if anyone has any other firmware sites that might work with other bin's or a different utility. Or if anyone has had experience with TSST corp which a new joint endeavor that does shit for online product support.

Okay, and you have allready tryed to uninstall and reinstall the driver set for the DvD rom Drive Combo Drive... whatever sorta drive :S Umm ya. It's maby possible the Protocol (codec) that the Drivers use was installed from that DvD "Dirty Hairy" you played. The DvD has a codec on it, and that might possibly have been switched over. so trying uninstalling and reinstalling. okay? :S good luck.

dvd function not working

Hrmm. Don't think it would be a codec problem because that only relates to the coding and decoding of digital/analog ... data
The problem seems to be related to the device itself. It could be related to the firmware or something even more complicated that lies deep within the device. What can we do? Continue to investigate the problem online.

I think I have a similar problem. My LG dvd-drive only reads CDs. DVDs don't work (or start to work but fail.. like Kresh). I have tried reinstalling drivers AND firmware... had no luck :(

dvd function not working

Hmmm, well if cdrw/dvd combo drives aren't that expensive (which is probably not the case) then just scrap that one and get a new one. Is the cdrw drive seperate from the dvd drive? Because if they are, I say scrap the dvd drive and get a new one if you've tried everything everyone else has suggested. If not then just get a dvd player and play dvd's on that lol.

dvd function not working

YAY! mine's working again.

I did this:

1) Made a bootable dos disk
2) copied over the latest firmware from LG site to the disk
3) rebooted in dos; ran the firmware
4) After the boot, reinstalled dvd-rom driver from LG
5) reboot
6) voila

Kresh, reinstall latest firmware + driver.

Cheers,
Wasay

I can't find firmware that works- i think that could fix it but the mfr. barely exists as a combined company and the model # firmwares dont work. gonna try epag's link.

is there a way to upgrade firmware while ignoring if your os/installer thinks its compatible- these arent drivers were dealin with lol.

its not the money- i would gladly upgrade to a dvd burner cept my rig already has one.

this is a custom built asus based laptop with the pentium m chip
if u need specs, i can dig em up

I have a CD-R+RW/ DvD R + RW Combo drive also, I bought it form Wally World... It works fine. I dont how some peoples drives stop working. Thats odd.

Flashing the firmware doesn't require OS support (Winxp).. it's all done in DOS. Drivers on the other hand: Right click on drive in device manager -> update driver -> install from specific location -> don't search. I will choose.. -> have disk

But it probably won't work if the drivers are incompatible.. dunno.

yea... :P the dos way to do it won't let me upgrade the firmware... same msg as before- i thought that fashion would let u use incorrect firmware and then let the device fail, but this one apparantly not- gonna call TSST/Samsung and probably yell a lot and end up buying a dvd rw.

You've spent more labor on this project than the drive is worth. RMA it and get a new one. LOL!

Added after 34 seconds:

And this time, get a name brand where you can find support easily with google. It pays in the long run, trust me.
